The Clean Nigeria Launch is a national campaign aimed at ending open defecation and achieving universal access to sanitation facilities by 2025. As part of this initiative, our agency is actively involved in mobilizing communities, raising awareness, and implementing sanitation interventions to promote the construction and use of household toilets, public latrines, and other sanitation facilities. Through community engagement, behavior change communication, and capacity building, we are working towards creating clean and hygienic environments where everyone can thrive.
Our sanitation initiatives focus on addressing the root causes of poor sanitation practices and improving hygiene behaviors among residents of small towns and rural areas. These initiatives include:
• Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS): We facilitate CLTS programs that empower communities to analyze their sanitation practices, recognize the health risks of open defecation, and take collective action to become open defecation-free (ODF). By mobilizing communities to construct and use latrines, adopt safe hygiene practices, and sustain ODF status, we promote a culture of sanitation and hygiene.
• School Sanitation Programs: We implement school sanitation programs to improve sanitation facilities and hygiene education in primary and secondary schools. Through the construction of gender-sensitive toilets, provision of handwashing stations, and integration of hygiene promotion into the curriculum, we aim to create healthy learning environments that support the well-being and academic success of students.
• Sanitation Marketing: We support the development of sanitation markets to increase access to affordable and quality sanitation products and services. By working with local entrepreneurs, suppliers, and financial institutions, we stimulate demand for sanitation products, promote innovative technologies, and facilitate access to financing for sanitation improvement projects.
Operation Wash is a flagship initiative of the Edo State Government aimed at accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) of ensuring access to water and sanitation for all. As part of this initiative, our agency collaborates with government agencies, NGOs, and other stakeholders to implement integrated water supply, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions in priority areas. Through investments in infrastructure, behavior change communication, and institutional strengthening, Operation Wash seeks to improve water security, enhance sanitation coverage, and reduce waterborne diseases in Edo State.
The Water Supply Enhancement Program focuses on improving access to reliable and sustainable water supply services in small towns and rural communities. Through infrastructure upgrades, water source protection measures, and capacity building activities, we aim to increase water availability, reduce water scarcity, and enhance the resilience of water supply systems to climate change impacts.
Our hygiene promotion campaigns aim to raise awareness and promote behavior change regarding key hygiene practices such as handwashing with soap, menstrual hygiene management, and safe food handling. Through community outreach, school-based education programs, and mass media campaigns, we empower individuals and communities to adopt and maintain hygienic behaviors, leading to improved health outcomes and disease prevention.
We conduct water quality monitoring and surveillance activities to assess the safety and potability of drinking water sources and ensure compliance with national water quality standards. By regularly testing water samples for microbial and chemical contaminants, we identify potential risks to public health and implement remedial actions to safeguard water quality and protect consumers’ health.
Our agency promotes integrated water resources management (IWRM) approaches to ensure the sustainable and equitable use of water resources for multiple purposes, including drinking water supply, agriculture, industry, and environmental conservation. By engaging stakeholders in participatory decision-making processes, we strive to balance competing water demands, mitigate water-related conflicts, and promote the efficient and equitable allocation of water resources.
In response to the increasing frequency and intensity of climate-related hazards, we integrate climate resilience and disaster risk reduction considerations into our water supply and sanitation interventions. This includes implementing measures such as flood protection infrastructure, drought-resistant water supply technologies, and emergency response plans to enhance the resilience of communities to climate-induced water challenges and natural disasters.
We prioritize the inclusion and empowerment of women and youth in our water supply and sanitation programs, recognizing their important roles as agents of change and key stakeholders in community development. Through targeted capacity building, skills training, and economic empowerment initiatives, we aim to enhance the participation, leadership, and socio-economic opportunities of women and youth in the WASH sector, contributing to gender equality and social inclusion.
